Help Fairness WV make our schools safer for LGBTQ kids
Jim Crawford told some of his fellow members of the Kanawha County Board of Education that he wouldn’t support hiring a woman to be a school principal just because she’s a lesbian. That’s outrageous, and it’s a problem our entire community should be concerned about. Our children learn from watching the behavior of adults in charge, and it’s clear our children are getting the wrong message. The fact is, LGBTQ students in West Virginia face incredibly high rates of bullying and harassment from their peers. About 30 percent of lesbian and gay high school students in our state attempted suicide in the last year, according to CDC data.
We must do better.
Our organization is in the middle of charting out a multi-year plan to improve the education system for LGBTQ kids. Teachers need to be trained on how to best support LGBTQ students and administrators like Jim Crawford need to be held accountable. If you’re angry at Jim Crawford’s bigoted views, can you chip in $50 to fund our work in education?
