Free LGBTQ webinar for WV’s healthcare professionals and students
Calling all professionals and college students in the medical, psychology, nursing or other health-related fields! Fairness West Virginia is offering a free online webinar to help students learn the best practices for serving LGBTQ patients. All people deserve competent and compassionate care, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
This skill-building webinar aims to provide medical and mental health students with the tools necessary to provide competent and compassionate care to LGBTQ patients. This webinar will provide foundational training on core concepts relating to LGBTQ people, including sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and gender expression. The webinar will provide students with tools to address a sexual orientation or gender identity they may not be familiar with. There will also be a general overview on the realities of being LGBT in West Virginia within the healthcare system. Finally, the webinar will provide students with a set of best practices when working with LGBTQ patients.
LGBTQ people makeup about 3 percent of our state’s population, and are encountered in every facet of life. Furthermore, West Virginia has the highest percentage of transgender youth compared to any other state, meaning that competency with LGBTQ populations is a critical skill for medical and mental health professionals. This also aligns with the codes of ethics for the AMA, APA, NASW, and AAP.
Successful completion of this training will offer two (2) Category One continuing education hours for WV licensed social workers authorized by the West Virginia Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, WV Board of Social Work provider #490013
Note: Because of the overwhelming response we’ve received, we’ve run out of space for the April 9 webinar. We’ve scheduled additional webinars. Currently, we’re accepting sign-ups for this webinar on May 21 from 2-4 p.m. We apologize, but two webinar sessions have already filled up!
