WV lawmakers are holding a public hearing this Friday on the License to Discriminate Bill
The License to Discriminate Bill, known by its supporters as the “Religious Freedom Restoration Act,” is heading to the House floor for a vote. It passed out of the Judiciary Committee this afternoon. Basically, the bill will give any person or corporation the power to discriminate under the guise of religious freedom.
This bill will of course harm LGBTQ people, essentially giving allow far-right extremists immunity from following the 18 local nondiscrimination ordinances across the state. But the License to Discriminate Bill will also harm religious minorities and many other marginalized groups.
The Legislature will hold a public hearing on this discriminatory bill THIS FRIDAY at 4 p.m. This is our chance to show legislators that Mountaineers won’t stand for discrimination, so we need your help to PACK THE CAPITOL.
The public hearing will be held in the House of Delegates chamber, and you should plan to arrive no later than 3:30 p.m. in order to sign up to speak. If you can’t make it in person, click the button below to submit written testimony that our staff will deliver to legislators.
When we defeated RFRA back in 2016, we only did so because an overwhelming number of Mountaineers spoke out. This time, Republicans hold a supermajority in both chambers. Let’s pack the Capitol and show these legislators that all kinds are welcome in West Virginia.
The best way you can help us defeat this bill right now is to help us flood the Capitol with calls and emails opposing this bill. Use the action alert below to email the legislators who represent you in less than 2 minutes.
